Culture and Community: Dashain Festivities and Silver Sunday Highlights

Last weekend, the Burnt Oak Nepalese Community (BONC) came together for two significant events – the Dashain festival and Silver Sunday at Middlesex University, in honour of the National Day of Older People.

On October 5th, 2024, BONC hosted Dashain celebration, welcoming over 250 attendees to the TA Centre on Deansbrook Road. The event was filled with a sense of unity, and the delicious aroma of traditional Nepalese cuisine.

A moment of silence was observed in honor of those who tragically lost their lives in the recent event in Nepal.

Thanks to the efforts of BONC’s cultural secretary, Umesh Khadka, and the support of community member Shushma Gurung, the event featured a blend of folk and modern music performed by talented community members. The performances of guest singers Kala Lamsal and Rabin Lamichhane were equally spectacular, as their powerful voices and the rhythm of the drums filled the room, bringing everyone to the dance floor.

Distinguished guests, including His Worshipful the Mayor, the Mayoress, and local councillors from Burnt Oak and Edgwarebury and the MP for Hendon added to the event’s prestige. The Mayor delivered a heartfelt speech, praising BONC for demonstrating what a community can achieve when united by shared values and goals.

The MP’s speech was also warmly received, especially when they greeted the audience in Nepali with “नमस्ते, दशैंको शुभकामना छ,” earning applause and appreciation from the crowd.

In a special moment, community member and advisor Mr. Krishan Karki became the highest bidder for a painting of Goddess Devi.

The next day celebrations continued, when BONC participated in Silver Sunday at Middlesex University to honour the National Day of Older People. BONC contributed to the event with two beautiful performances by the BONC children and Ms. Nirmala Chhyama.

These performances were proudly supported by BONC members, including the Chairman, Vice Chairman, First Ladies, Aama Samuha’s chairperson, proud parents, and Cllr Kamal Gurung from Burnt Oak ward, all coming together to celebrate and strengthen the community spirit.

A special mention for both the event goes to BONC member Mrs. Shushma Gurung, who, in just a few weeks, got our children dancing to the popular song ‘Purva Paschim.’ The rehearsal and performance was filled with so much dedication that even parents can be heard humming the tune when out and about.

गत सप्ताहन्तमा, बर्न्ट ओक नेपाली समुदाय (BONC) ले दुई महत्त्वपूर्ण कार्यक्रमहरूको लागि एक साथ आयो - दशैं पर्व र मिडिलसेक्स युनिभर्सिटीमा सिल्भर आइतबार, जेष्ठ नागरिकहरूको राष्ट्रिय दिवसको सम्मानमा।

अक्टोबर ५, २०२४ मा, BONC ले डिन्सब्रुक रोडमा रहेको TA केन्द्रमा २५० भन्दा बढी सहभागीहरूलाई स्वागत गर्दै दशैं उत्सवको आयोजना गर्‍यो।। कार्यक्रम एकताको भावना र परम्परागत नेपाली परिकारको स्वादिष्ट सुगन्धले भरिएको थियो।

नेपालमा हालै भएको घटनामा ज्यान गुमाउनेहरुको सम्झनामा एक क्षण मौनधारण गर्यौं ।

BONC का सांस्कृतिक सचिव उमेश खड्काको प्रयास र समुदायकी सदस्य सुष्मा गुरुङको सहयोगमा भएको कार्यक्रममा समुदायका प्रतिभाशाली सदस्यहरूद्वारा प्रस्तुत लोक र आधुनिक संगीतको मिश्रण प्रस्तुत गरिएको थियो।। अतिथि गायिका कला लम्साल र रविन लामिछानेको प्रस्तुति पनि उत्तिकै रमणीय थियो, उनीहरुको दमदार स्वर र ढोलको लयले सबैलाई डान्स फ्लोरमा ल्याएको थियो । पछेउरि लिस्यो र पातली ( चाइनाको किरिम)

केहि लोकप्रिय गीतहरु मध्ये दुई गीत पनि थिए

उपासक मेयर, मेयरेस र बर्न्ट ओक र एजवेयरबरीका स्थानीय काउन्सिलरहरू लगायत विशिष्ट अतिथिहरूले कार्यक्रमको प्रतिष्ठामा थपे।। मेयरले हृदयस्पर्शी भाषण दिए, साझा मूल्य र लक्ष्यहरूद्वारा एकताबद्ध हुँदा समुदायले के हासिल गर्न सक्छ भनेर प्रदर्शन गरेकोमा BONC को प्रशंसा गरे।। सांसदको भाषणलाई पनि न्यानो स्वागत गरिएको थियो, विशेष गरी जब उनीहरूले नेपालीमा “नमस्ते, दशैंको शुभकामना छ” भन्दै दर्शकहरूलाई भीडबाट ताली र प्रशंसा कमाए।। एक विशेष क्षणमा, समुदाय सदस्य र सल्लाहकार श्री। देवी देवीको चित्रका लागि कृष्ण कार्कीले सबैभन्दा बढी बोली लगाएका छन्। अर्को दिन उत्सवहरू जारी रह्यो, जब BONC ले मिडलसेक्स विश्वविद्यालयमा सिल्भर आइतवारमा ज्येष्ठ नागरिकहरूको राष्ट्रिय दिवसको सम्मानमा भाग लिएको थियो।। BONC ले कार्यक्रममा BONC बालबालिका र सुश्री निर्मला गुरुङ च्यामाले दुईवटा सुन्दर प्रस्तुति दिएर योगदान पुर्यायो। । यी प्रदर्शनहरूलाई BONC सदस्यहरूले गर्वका साथ समर्थन गरेका थिए, जसमा अध्यक्ष, उपाध्यक्ष, प्रथम महिला, आमा समुहाका अध्यक्ष, गर्वका अभिभावकहरू र बर्न्ट ओक वार्डका Cllr कमल गुरुङ, सबै मिलेर सामुदायिक भावनालाई मनाउन र सुदृढ गर्न आएका थिए।। दुबै कार्यक्रमको लागि विशेष उल्लेख BONC सदस्य श्रीमती सुष्मा गुरुङलाई जान्छ। सुष्मा गुरुङले केही सातामै हाम्रा बालबालिकालाई चर्चित गीत ‘पूर्वपश्चिम’मा नाच्न तालिम दिइन् । ' रिहर्सल र प्रदर्शन यति धेरै समर्पणले भरिएको थियो कि आमाबाबुले पनि बाहिर र वरिपरि धुन गुनगुनाइरहेको सुन्न सकिन्छ।
